A Great Man Has Passed

Francisco Monzon, a longtime resident of Villa Carolina, Puerto Rico most recently passed away and went home to be with the Lord on January 11, 2012 in Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania. He was in the care of his eldest grandson Henry Michael Monzon and his wife Audrey Monzon.

Don Paco, as he was known to his friends and family was born on la Calle Betances, Santurce, Puerto Rico on the February 23, 1928 to Margarita Acevedo de Monzon and Francisco Monzon Sr. He married Ms. Miguelina De Jesus on January 21, 1950 whom was born in Arroyo Puerto Rico, to whom he always referred to as “the most beautiful woman he has ever seen” and he meant it. His passing was 9 days short of their 62nd wedding anniversary.

He voluntarily enlisted into the US Marine Corp from 1951 through 1952 were he rose to the rank of Private first class in the 2nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Marine Division. Having seen combat in the Korean conflict, he was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 2 stars, The UN Service Ribbon and the Purple heart for wounds sustained at the hands of the enemy. He had then and since considered himself a proud Marine. Always proclaiming, “Semper Fi.”

Upon receiving an Honorable Discharge from the US Marine Corps,  Don Paco worked for the US Postal Service in New York, then in Puerto Rico. There he retired from the USPS Express Mail Division located at the San Juan International Airport.

Along with the deepest love for his wife “Guelin” and his family, Don Paco was a loyal friend, a passionate baseball fan, a proud Puerto Rican and a deeply patriotic American. His life is an example of the simple rewards that life can bring through faith in God, hard work, public service, personal commitment and the belief that as a NY Mets’ fan “there’s always next season."

He is survived by his wife of 62 years Miguelina; three sons Frank, Henry and Benny; his nine grandchildren, Sheyla, Michael, Katrina, Christian, Sean, Crystina, Crystal, Christopher, and Christina, and eight great grandchildren, Adrian, Daree, Joshua (JR), Rocco, Gabriel, Lymarie, Isabella, and Mikaela.
